New Treadmill Features Unweighted Technology, Pelvic Suspension

Ashland, Ore-based GlideCycle has introduced the GlideTrak™, an indoor treadmill that blends unweighted technology with low-impact training that is already being used to rehab patients after knee surgery.

GlideTrak is designed in particular for rehabilitation and medical facilities that commonly treat individuals weakened or impaired by illness, suffering from mobility issues that limit physical activity, or for those recovering from injury or surgery.

At one facility, the Omega Sports Rehabilitation Center in Los Gatos, Calif, therapists are already using the device with patients recovering from major knee surgery.

Surgeon Gordon Levin, MD, thinks the treadmill’s technology is helping to speed recovery times without endangering the surgically repaired joints. “Patients get a lot of exercise that they wouldn’t get, and doesn’t put the stress on the anti-cruciate ligament,” he says.

The system features a comfortable pelvic suspension system that lifts patients without placing pressure on sensitive perineal tissues. The desired amount of weight-bearing may be achieved by simple strap adjustments or by using the treadmill incline/decline feature.
